What a fantastic adventure we had representing City of Norwich and GB at the World Masters Swimming Championships in Singapore! Held in the heart of Southeast Asia’s vibrant Lion City, the event brought together thousands of swimmers from around the globe – and among them, Sarah and Spike.
Unfortunately, the open water was 2 weeks prior to the pool swimming so Sarah had to take on the challenge of the longer events in the pool (not something she enjoys!), although Sarah dived into the 800m and 400m freestyle with determination. Racing in the impressive OCBC Aquatic Centre and the newly erected World Aquatics Championship pool she delivered strong performances, pacing herself brilliantly and finishing both races strong. The 800m especially was a test of endurance following a dodgy tummy and a 23C pool temperature, but Sarah rose to the occasion, proving that consistent training and grit pay off on the world stage. Thankfully the 400m (to Sarah a sprint) was a much better affair. It took place in the other pool (the OCBC), which was a little warmer, but bizarrely had two “Ts” at one end making sure that she had to concentrate on turns.
Meanwhile, Spike took on the sprints with his trademark speed and focus all in the World Championship pool. Competing in the 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, and 50m backstroke, he showed serious sprinting credentials. His starts were sharp, his turns tight, and his finishes fast – exactly what sprint events demand and he had practised under Luke for the past few months. The 50m backstroke was a standout, with a strong swim that highlighted his technical form and focus on underwaters. Spike finished a credible 11th in his age group for this event.
Beyond the Pool
Of course, the championships weren’t just about the racing – Singapore offered the perfect backdrop for exploring between events. From hawker stalls to Marina Bay Sands, there was plenty to take in. It was great to catch up with up with fellow swimmers from across the UK. It was a perfect event to combine with a family holiday so outside of racing we soaked up the sights, sounds, and flavours of the city, forging memories and friendships with foreign swimmers everywhere we went.
Looking Ahead
It was a great opportunity for us to compete on the World stage again after a long time as the boy’s swimming have been taking priority over the years. However, the bug is now back, and we look forward to other events, such as the Europeans in Paris next year and who knows where next. We are so fortunate to have a love of swimming which can take you around the world, at any age!
