Newmarket 2018

With coach Sophie Fairhurst to guide and support, City of Norwich swimmers Oliver Jarrett, Catherine Marr, Suzanne Warren and Owen Woodrow swam their way to success at the Regional Disability Championships in Newmarket.

A fast paced gala kept swimmers and coaches on their toes as the races moved swiftly and efficiently! However, the squad remained focused in what was a drama filled meet with Regional titles and qualifying times up for grabs.

Oliver

Oliver had a tough day with his classification being assessed, but performed extremely well swimming to 2nd in the 100m breaststroke in a time of 1.55.06, 3rd in the 100m freestyle in 1.19.39 and 1st in the 200m IM in an impressive time of 3.22.41. He added another first place finish in the 50m back in a time of 46.60.

Catherine

Catherine led from the start in her 200m IM, showing great finesse in her butterfly leg. She continued her great form to take the title in 2.53.76 gaining 619 points. More success followed as she completed the 100m breaststroke in 1.27.85 taking the title and then the silver in a highly contested 50m Freestyle with a time of 33.41. She can now look forward to the National Junior Championships with confidence.

Susanne

Suzanne started with the 100m Freestyle finishing in 2nd place with a time of 2.05.94 for 464 points and just a tenth away from her PB. The 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke followed with times of 1.03.13 gaining 714 points and 1.00.17 earning 679 points respectively gaining 2 Regional titles and qualifying times for the English Swimming Championships.

Owen

Owen had a brilliant championships with the highlight being his 200m IM which secured another qualification time for Junior Nationals on the 14th-15th April, with a 1st place finish in a time of 3.24.69. The 100m freestyle brought him a 2nd place finish with 1.14.89 and 445 points. This was followed by impressive swims in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1.28.47 to take 1st place and he finished the day with another solid swim to earn 2nd place finish in the 50m freestyle in 34.41.

Team Success

So a great meet for the swimmers which resulted City of Norwich swimmers placing in the top three of every race entered, with the team achieving a total of eight Regional titles as well as 5 silvers and 1 bronze, in addition to multiple qualifying times for National and International events.

After the event Sophie commented “it was my first para meet to coach and I had a great time, the atmosphere was super and all of the swimmers worked really hard with swims to reflect how hard they work”
